Androgenetic alopecia is more complex than a single hormone or pathway. Research has identified several biological processes involved in the condition. Understanding how these processes contribute to follicular miniaturization is an important part of understanding AGA itself.

The first step toward better understanding is recognizing that there may be more than one mechanism to study.

Minoxidil doesn’t work the same way for everyone, and part of the reason may be happening inside the hair follicle. A 2026 review reports that approximately 60% of users may not achieve visible improvement, highlighting an important question in hair-loss research: why do some follicles respond while others don’t?

Menopause changes more than reproductive hormones. It can also change the environment in which hair follicles grow.

Hair loss around menopause is an important area of women’s health, yet dedicated clinical evidence remains limited.

AGA is common, but its prevalence is easy to underestimate. Up to 50% of men and up to 40% of women are affected. By age 50, half of all men show signs of AGA; by age 70, prevalence reaches up to 80% in men and up to 50% in women, with a marked increase after menopause.

A condition this common deserves continued scientific attention.

Hair loss is often described as if the follicle simply “stops growing.”

The biology is more nuanced. In androgenetic alopecia, the changes happen gradually, across repeated hair-growth cycles. Understanding what is happening at the follicular level helps explain why AGA is a progressive condition and why the biology behind hair loss matters when studying potential treatments.

This serves as the basis for grasping the follicle and pursuing further research into answers.
